Fillings for the modern world
You probably remember the days when getting a filling meant getting a mouthful of metal. You might even have some remnants still lurking in there somewhere. Thankfully, today, with advancements in modern dentistry, we are able to fill cavities and combat tooth decay with a durable and natural tooth-colored material that blends in seamlessly with the rest of your teeth. No one will ever know you’ve had a cavity filled (except for Dr. Gollofon and his assistant, but don’t worry, your secret’s safe with us).
The enemy: tooth decay
While it may be a bit of a stretch to say that tooth decay is the root of all evil, in the world of dentistry, it kind of is. And in the fight for all that is good and just, it is important to know your enemy. That’s why it is important for our patients to understand tooth decay and what causes it in order to best protect themselves against it.
Tooth Decay 101
Tooth decay, or dental caries is the number one chronic childhood disease. That is not to say that tooth decay does not affect adults, but it is much more common in children as they do not yet possess the knowledge and dexterity to properly care for their teeth. While a cavity caused by tooth decay is easily treated with a filling, left untreated it can have serious implications on overall health and quality of life.
The primary cause of tooth decay is sugar. Sugar that is allowed to remain on teeth is quickly broken down into acid that eats away at tooth enamel and causes cavities. The good news is, tooth decay is preventable! While minimizing or eliminating sugar from your diet is recommended, we realize this is not entirely realistic (this is America, after all).
The best thing you can do in the fight against tooth decay is to maintain a strict oral hygiene routine – regular brushing and flossing, and brushing or at least rinsing with water, or chewing gum containing xylitol after consuming sugary foods or beverages. You should also make sure to come see Dr. Gollofon for your recommended check-ups so that if there are signs of decay, we can fill the cavity and stop the decay from progressing.
Never fear, tooth colored fillings are here!
So we’ve found signs of tooth decay…don’t panic. Thankfully, this is one battle you don’t have to fight alone. Your Seattle dentist, Dr. Gollofon, and our team have got your back as your allies for oral health, and we’ve got some tricks up our sleeve to knock tooth decay out for good. What’s our secret weapon? Tooth colored fillings of course!
Tooth colored fillings are a modern solution for filling cavities and preventing further tooth decay. Tooth colored resin blends in seamlessly with your natural teeth, so you don’t have to live with the glaring reminder of dental work every time you open your mouth. Not only are tooth colored fillings more aesthetically pleasing than metal fillings, but they are more resistant to wear and tear, and they will not expand and contract with changes in temperature like their metal counterparts. They are also mercury-free, making them a safer alternative to metal fillings.
